About this place
A district library terraced into a slope beneath Bulgwang mountain, with exposed concrete and stepped rooftop terraces open to readers.
Eunpyeong Public Library opened in 2001 on a hillside in north-west Seoul, with the rocky ridge of Bulgwang mountain behind it. The building steps down the slope over a basement and three floors, about 5,000 m² in all, and its exposed concrete volumes are arranged as a series of terraces.
Those terraced rooftops are the highlight: outdoor reading spaces that follow the hill and open views across the neighbourhood to the mountains. The building won the main prize of the Korean Architecture Awards in 2001 and a Seoul Architecture Award in 2002, and was later named one of Korea's outstanding public library buildings. It was renovated in 2014 and remains a busy local library, open to everyone.
