Hainan Science and Technology Museum

The Hainan Science and Technology Museum is a major civic project by MAD Architects (led by Ma Yansong) on the island of Hainan. The design continues MAD's signature approach of using organic, landscape-like forms to challenge the hard boundary between built structure and natural environment. The museum complex comprises interconnected pavilions with curved white rooflines that recall the coastline of the South China Sea — their flowing profiles visible from the water and the surrounding parkland. The building houses science, technology, and culture programmes within large column-free halls beneath the sculptural roof. The project is part of Hainan's broader development as a free trade zone and cultural destination.
