About this place
A museum on South Korea's east coast dedicated to the Silla general Isabu and the Dokdo islands, designed by Simplex Architects. The bold concrete building draws on maritime and territorial themes.
The Isabu Dorkdo Museum in Samcheok, Gangwon Province commemorates the Silla kingdom general Isabu, who incorporated Usan (Dokdo) into Korean territory in 512 AD, and celebrates Korea's sovereignty over the Dokdo islands. Designed by Simplex Architects, the building uses bold geometric massing and raw concrete to create a monumental civic presence on the east coast. The museum houses historical artefacts, interactive displays about Dokdo's ecology and history, and spaces for community events. Its seaside location connects the architecture to the maritime narrative at the heart of the museum's programme.
