About this place
Tadao Ando's two concrete buildings in Hyehwa: a triangular art centre with concert hall and museum, and a creative centre with a roof garden.
The Jaeneung Culture Center (JCC) is Tadao Ando's work in Hyehwa, a few steps from Hyehwa Rotary in central Seoul, opened in 2015 by the Jaeneung education foundation. The client chose Ando for his ability to make buildings that sit calmly in an old neighbourhood of low houses and narrow streets.
It is made of two buildings. The JCC Art Center, a sharp triangular volume in Ando's smooth exposed concrete, holds a concert hall and the JCC Museum. The JCC Creative Center houses an auditorium, creative studios and a roof garden. Height limits keep both low, and Ando relies on geometry, light and the precision of the concrete rather than ornament. Check the concert and exhibition programme before visiting to see the interiors.
