About this place

The national modern art museum's Seoul branch — a 'museum without a facade' of low courtyards threaded between Gyeongbokgung Palace, a former military command building and hanok streets.

Opened in 2013 on the site of the former Defense Security Command beside Gyeongbokgung Palace, MMCA Seoul was designed by mp_art architects as a cluster of low volumes and open courtyards ('madang') rather than a single monumental building. The historic red-brick command building and Jongchinbu hall are kept and woven into the complex, so the museum reads as a continuation of the surrounding palace and Bukchon fabric.
