About this place

Museum SAN opened in May 2013 in the Oak Valley resort in the Gangwon mountains, about two hours from Seoul. The name abbreviates Space, Art, Nature — a double meaning since san is the Korean word for mountain. Designed by Tadao Ando for the Hansol Cultural Foundation, the complex unfolds across a sloping ridge, its geometric volumes assembled in exposed concrete and set against dense pine forest. The experience is sequential: visitors pass through a Flower Garden and Water Garden before reaching the main building, where galleries hold traditional Korean calligraphy and international contemporary works. The outdoor Stone Garden offers stillness before the James Turrell Hall — a cave-like chamber dedicated to the artist’s ganzfeld and skyspace pieces. In 2023, Ando completed the Space of Light, a meditation room where a slot in the concrete ceiling tracks sunlight across the floor. Ando’s signature material language — board-marked concrete, deep shadow, water as mirror — frames rather than competes with the landscape. Openings cut to expose mountain views; covered walkways calibrate the pace between zones. Alexander Liberman’s large red sculpture Archway stands over the water garden, its reflection doubling across the pool. The full circuit takes around two hours on foot. The James Turrell spaces require timed entry and sell out on weekends.
