Parconido Bakery Cafe

About this place

Parconido is a bakery café completed in 2022 in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang-si, a satellite city north of Seoul. It was designed by Seoul-based practice Sukchulmok (led by Park Hyunhee), who took as the starting point for the project a brief from a client who had spent formative years in Italy and wanted a space that referenced the texture of European civic life — specifically the image of a sunlit piazza surrounded by brick buildings and stone columns. The design occupies 630 square metres across three floors and a rooftop terrace, arranged as a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that move between enclosed rooms and open decks. The organising discipline of the project is a single geometric rule: every curved element — columns, walls, transitions between wall and floor, and furniture — uses a radius of exactly 600 millimetres. This consistent radius produces a spatial coherence in which diverse shapes (round columns, U-shaped wall openings, hemispherical booths) read as parts of a single family rather than competing formal gestures. The radius value was derived from the distance from the top of a standard door or window to the ceiling finish, which Sukchulmok treated as the basic human-scale module of the project. The primary materials are clay brick — stacked without holes and applied in some areas as thin cut sections over steel frames to reduce weight — travertine limestone cut to small tiles (1.5mm × 1.5mm) on interior walls, floors and ceilings, and warm-toned wood. On the rooftop, brick columns with arched connections frame outdoor seating beneath a removable fabric canopy. The project was shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2023 in the retail and hospitality interiors category and published widely in architecture and design media. It is located five minutes by car from Ilsan Lake Park.
