About this place
Four-building ensemble on Eindhoven's former gasworks site combining residences, artisan workshops, a hotel and exhibition space — winner of the 2023 NRP Gulden Feniks.
Made by NRE is the culmination of a decade-long transformation of the NRE terrein, Eindhoven's former municipal gas factory established in 1899. A collective of residents, entrepreneurs, designers, and makers won a 2018 municipal competition for the last four undeveloped plots on the site, and worked with Houben/Van Mierlo Architecten to realize an ensemble that resists the uniformity typical of urban infill.
The four buildings each carry a distinct identity: Ambachtsdorp arranges nine compact urban dwellings around a shared courtyard, with integrated live-work spaces recalling the grain of traditional craftspeople's streets; Park NRE turns a residential building toward the interior garden; Werkgebouw is an industrial collective building with green facades elevated above a parking level; and Body Building, developed in close collaboration with designers Rombout Frieling, Bart Hess, and Harm Rensink, pushes the concept of collective identity further — its surface and spatial decisions shaped by creative practitioners rather than handed down from a single architectural will.
The street names on the site — Gashouder, Gasfabriek — still carry the memory of the industrial infrastructure that once stood here, and Houben/Van Mierlo's approach threads through that history without nostalgic mimicry. The mix of programmes — residences, artisan workshops, an exhibition space, a small hotel, a restaurant, and a language school — creates the kind of genuinely heterogeneous ground-floor life that most developers write about but rarely deliver. The ensemble won the Publieksprijs Dirk Roosenburgprijs and the NRP Gulden Feniks for area transformation in 2023.
