DOMUSDELA occupies the former Mariënhage monastery complex in central Eindhoven, a site with roots stretching to 1419. The centrepiece is the Paterskerk, a neo-Gothic church built in 1898 to designs by architect Hegener, which now seats up to 1,000 people for ceremonies, concerts, conferences and cultural events. In 2017 the last Augustinians vacated the complex; it was acquired by insurance and funeral company Dela, which commissioned diederendirrix and architecten|en|en to carry out the adaptive reuse. The architects worked to preserve the spatial character of the church interior: original stone columns, brick vaulting, stained glass and the soaring nave remain intact, while lighting, acoustics and event infrastructure have been embedded with minimal visual intrusion. The former chapel provides an intimate ceremony space for smaller gatherings. The adjacent former boarding school and gymnasium Augustinianum has been converted into Hotel Mariënhage, a 72-room hotel with café-restaurant, creating an integrated campus where guests can eat, sleep and attend events within the original cloister walls. The project is one of the more accomplished examples of sacred adaptive reuse in the Netherlands, threading contemporary hospitality and cultural programming through a fabric of considerable historical and architectural weight.
