About this place
Tadao Ando's V-shaped glass and concrete building on Seopjikoji cape — a restaurant and observation deck facing east toward Seongsan Ilchulbong, designed to frame Jeju's sea and sunrise.
Glass House (글라스하우스) stands on Seopjikoji, a dramatic basalt cape on the eastern edge of Jeju Island, with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Seongsan Ilchulbong directly in view across the water to the north. It was completed in 2008 as part of the Phoenix Island resort development and designed by Tadao Ando, who described the project as an attempt to "capture Jeju's sunshine" and "embrace Jeju's seas."
The building's plan is a V-shape that opens toward the east, with each wing framing a slightly different angle of the panorama. The primary materials are Ando's characteristic board-formed concrete and large expanses of glass — the concrete carries the building's weight and geometry, while the glass allows the landscape to become the interior's dominant presence. The floors slope gently in places to follow the coastal topography, and the roof terrace is arranged as a series of platforms from which the full arc of the cape and ocean is visible.
The programme is hospitality: the building contains restaurants and a café that operate at different times of day, though the building's architectural significance has made it a destination in its own right, visited independently of any meal. Ando intended for the arrival of sunrise over Seongsan Ilchulbong — visible precisely along the building's axis on clear mornings — as the defining experience of the place.
Seopjikoji was already a significant landscape before the resort's development: the cape's pampas grass fields, basalt outcrops, and lighthouse have made it one of the most photographed locations in Jeju. The Glass House positions itself within that landscape without dominating it, using its transparency and low profile to remain subordinate to the horizon. It is one of several Tadao Ando works in Korea and one of the most visited examples of contemporary architecture on the island.
